Oscar Joiner of Florissant matched four out of five white-ball numbers, as well as the Powerball number, to win a $10,000 prize in the Jan. 9 Powerball drawing.  Joiner, 55, purchased his winning ticket at Spirits Plus II, 3803 Vaile Ave. in Florissant, and claimed his prize at the Lottery’s St. Louis regional office on Jan. 11.

Joiner learned he was a winner with a routine scan of his ticket at the grocery store.

“I was at Shop N Save and went to the (Check-A-Ticket) machine, and it said, ‘You are a winner,’” he said.  “I was stunned; I couldn’t believe it.”

The first call he made was to his wife, who wasn’t quite sure whether she should believe his good news at first.  Joiner said he checked the numbers online when he returned home just to make sure, and then the couple decided to use the prize money to “get braces for my daughter.”

Joiner, a store manager at Mattress Giant, used the Quick Pick option to allow the computer to randomly generate his number selections for him.  The winning numbers for the Jan. 9 Powerball drawing were:  20, 41, 44, 50 and 54.  The Powerball number was 22.

Powerball is a multi-state game that features jackpots starting at $20 million.  More details about the game and a listing of unclaimed prizes are available at Molottery.com.
