St. Louis Social Services Workers Named Lottery Team of the Month

Congratulations to “Eight is Enough,” a group of employees for the Missouri Department of Social Services in midtown St. Louis and the first 2010 Lottery Team of the Month. The group of Powerball-playing co-workers and friends will receive a prize package of Lottery merchandise and will also be featured as the January Team of the Month at Molottery.com.

The “Eight is Enough” team line-up consists of:  Mary Flynn, Audrey Liddell, Deena Paynes, Vickie Johnson, Norma Rhodes, Holly Roe, Diana Taylor and Sam Tucker, all of St. Louis.  The group implemented a “Three Dollar Thursday” strategy, in which everyone contributes $3 to allow for the purchase of 12 Powerball tickets for Saturday’s drawing and 12 more for the following Wednesday’s drawing.

The eligibility specialists work daily to help clients determine eligibility for income maintenance programs such as food assistance, medical services, temporary assistance and nutritional assistance.  It can be a very busy and stressful job and, according to team captain Vickie Johnson, the “true, honest hope of ‘Let’s win something, even if it’s just something to supplement’” is a welcomed temporary distraction.

If the team were to hit a large jackpot prize, Johnson joked that she’d “be coming in and telling everyone to put in their leave slip.”

But in reality, given their line of work, Johnson said, “Everyone has it on their minds that charity would be at the forefront.”

Johnson’s advice for others forming Lottery teams is the same as her philosophy on life:  “Stay positive.”

“But they better wait until after we win,” she added with a laugh.

Each month, the Missouri Lottery recognizes a players group as part of the Lottery Captains promotion.  Tell us about your team on the Lottery Captains Page at Molottery.com. To learn more about Powerball, visit the Lottery’s Powerball page
