Holiday Stocking Stuffer Leads to $100,000 Lottery Prize

According to James Menzie of St. Peters, his family has a holiday tradition of buying Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets as stocking stuffers.  The tradition became a new family favorite this year when one of the “$100,000 Pay Day” tickets revealed an unexpected Christmas present in the form of the game’s $100,000 top prize.

“My wife sent me on a Christmas journey to get $60 worth of Scratchers tickets,” he explained of his holiday win.  “She meant $1 or $2 tickets, but she didn’t specify.  We had six stockings, so I just pointed to this ($5) ticket and said, ‘Give me 12 of those.’”

The deviation proved to be a stroke of good luck for Menzie, 58, and his wife, Annette.

“Once a year at Christmas is the only time we do this (buy Scratchers tickets),” he added.  “It could have been any of us, but my wife was actually the one who had it in her stocking.”

Upon learning the prize amount was too large to be cashed at the local retailer, Menzie was anxious to redeem his winning ticket and formulated his plan after visiting the Missouri Lottery Web site.

“I dropped my son and daughter-in-law off at the airport and came straight up here (to the Lottery’s St. Louis regional office) to claim my prize,” he said.

Menzie, who purchased the winning ticket at Thoele Convenience Store, 403 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters, said the couple plan to put the prize money towards retirement.

$100,000 Pay Day” is a $5 game that officially began March 28.  Information on remaining prizes for “$100,000 Pay Day” and all other Missouri Lottery Scratchers games can be found at Molottery.com.
