Joplin Man Walks Away with $30,000 Scratchers Prize

Little did Patrick Roland know when he set off on foot to The Store, 1210 E. 15th St. in Joplin, he would be walking home with a Missouri Lottery prize worth $30,000.  But Roland, 30, would soon learn he held a winning “Triple Payout” Scratchers ticket with the game’s top prize.

“I walked down to The Store with my stepdad,” Roland began.  “I bought 10 tickets while we were there.  It was just after Christmas, so I figured, ‘Why not?’  When we got back to the house, I gave him the odds, and I took the evens.”

It all seemed very ordinary for Roland, a self-described “sporadic player,” as he noted his first tickets didn’t reveal any prize money.  He hesitated, though, as he scratched the last one and showed it to his stepfather.  Both men quickly realized the real value of that last ticket.

“I got up and hootered and hollered,” he shared.

A trainer at a cereal manufacturing facility, Roland plans to put some of his winnings into his Individual Retirement Account, help his mother get another vehicle and “put the rest in the bank account.”

Triple Payout,” a $2 game that officially began Aug. 29, still offers more than $4.6 million in prizes. Further information on remaining prizes for “Triple Payout” and all other Missouri Lottery Scratchers games can be found at Molottery.com.
