Ronald Atchison was on his way to an early holiday gathering on Dec. 12 when he decided to stop off at Casey’s General Store, 103 Rt. OO in Hallsville, to cash in a winning $6 Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. Using his winnings to purchase the new Wheel of Fortune® game while he was there eventually led the Stoutsville man to Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City to cash in a $2,500 prize.
“I was on my way to Christmas dinner,” he said, explaining that he and his wife, Sheila, quickly got back in the car with their newly purchased ticket to continue with their journey.
“My wife always watches Wheel of Fortune® on TV, and she’s really good at it,” he said. “So I told her, ‘Babe, just scratch if off.’”
As he drove, Sheila began to scratch the ticket and uncovered what she believed to be a $250 prize. With that news, Atchison pulled over to the side of the road and excitedly told her to continue scratching the ticket.
“I said, “Go ahead; you’re good luck for me,’” he said.
They quickly realized their ticket was worth more than they had originally thought, and they stopped at a nearby gas station to have it verified.
“We’re going to buy more Christmas; that’s what we’ve decided,” he added, noting that everyone at their Christmas dinner was happy for them and couldn’t wait “to see it on the Lottery Web site.”
Wheel of Fortune ® is a $3 game that officially began Dec. 9. Atchison’s ticket was the first $2,500 prize redeemed for the new game, which offers more than $7 million in total prizes.
Eligible non-winning tickets may be entered in the “Wheel of Fortune® Second-Chance Promotion” for a chance to win trips for two to Hollywood to audition to be a contestant on TV’s Wheel of Fortune,® as well as cash prizes of $900, $600 and $300.
