Deborah Duckworth is known as the proprietor of Happy Joe’s Corner Bar and Grill in Montgomery City. To those that know her, she’s also known for playing the same set of numbers every time she plays the Missouri Lottery’s Club Keno game. Those favorite numbers paid off on Nov. 11, earning her a cash prize of $19,213.
In Keno, players choose how many different numbers or “spots” they want to play, ranging from 1 to 10. Twenty random numbers from a field of 1-80 are then chosen in computerized drawings every five minutes. Duckworth played an 8-spot game, selecting the numbers 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65 and 75.
“I’m faithful to the fives,” she declared of her chosen numbers.
As the staff at Happy Joe’s, 324 N. Sturgeon St., prepared for the lunch crowd, Duckworth decided to squeeze in a few games of Keno. When she didn’t immediately win, she went back to the kitchen and resumed business as usual. It was then that her known set of favorite numbers appeared on the monitor.
“The bartender hollered, ‘Are you playing?,’” she said. “So I went out and looked.”
To her amazement, the screen showed all eight of her “fives.”
“I said, ‘Do you know what’s it’s worth? Neither do I,’” Duckworth laughed, as she recalled sharing the winning moment with co-workers.
Because she opted to play an 8-spot game, her win also meant she was eligible for the rolling jackpot bonus prize – called a “Progressive” jackpot – an automatic feature when playing 6-, 7- or 8-spot games.
“I knew I’d get some of the Progressive, but I didn’t know how much,” she said.
After the lunch rush subsided, Duckworth was able to scan her ticket and determine her prize amount, making the crew at Happy Joe’s even happier.
