Kansas City Man Will "Pay Bills" with $100,000 Lottery Prize

audio icon A Kansas City man is $100,000 richer after uncovering the top prize on a Missouri Lottery "Mega Bucks" Scratchers ticket.  Kevin Horton, 54, purchased the winning ticket at QuikTrip, 9323 E. 350 Highway in Raytown, on Nov. 7.

Horton was at his home when he realized his ticket held a top prize.

"I was out in the garage with my dogs and my wife," he began.  "I hit that first $20,000, and I thought something was wrong here.  I kept scratching, and it came out to the $100,000."

He handed the ticket to his wife, who responded by saying, "Oh my gosh!"

"She had to sit down," he added.

The Hortons uncovered the prize on Saturday evening, so they had the daunting task of waiting until Lottery offices opened again on Monday to claim the prize.

"We kept looking at it (ticket) about every hour," he shared.

When asked about plans for the prize money, Horton said he intends to "be smart with it" and pay bills.

As for advice for fellow Lottery players, he added that, "If you win anything, just don’t get silly with it."

"Mega Bucks," a $5 game with a top prize of $100,000, officially began on Sept. 26.  To date, the game has six top prizes, as well as thousands of prizes ranging from $5 to $20,000, remaining in play.
