John Tarvid of Ellington enjoyed his stay at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas last year, so he figured maybe it was a good sign when he spotted a Missouri Lottery game by the same name. The theory paid off when Tarvid, 46, won $10,000 on a “Monte Carlo” Scratchers ticket on Oct. 18.
Traveling home from a trip to St. Louis, the mine worker had stopped at I-55 Fuel Stop, 1707 Highway Z in Pevely, when he decided to buy a couple of $5 “Monte Carlo” tickets, as well some $2 games.
It was some two hours later and back at home when Tarvid scratched his tickets. The first “Monte Carlo” ticket produced a $25 prize, and when he began to scratch off the second one, he decided to solicit his wife’s assistance to make sure what he thought he saw was the real deal.
“She said, ‘I think you won $10,000,” he began. “And I said, ‘Ah, no I didn’t.’”
“It didn’t really sink in until I got the check today,” he added.
Remaining prizes for “Monte Carlo” total more than $8 million. The $5 Scratchers game, which officially began June 13, offers a top prize of $100,000.
