Byron Jackson might be considered a creature of habit, a trait that led the full-time student to a $10,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery “Triple Payout” Scratchers game.
“I can’t help but every time I go to the gas station, I buy Lottery tickets,” Jackson said of his stop at Abel’s Quik Shop, 3066 S. Clark St. in Mexico, on the evening of Oct. 13.
Deviating a bit from that regular routine, however, was what earned the automotive technology student his biggest Lottery win.
“I usually buy the $1 tickets, but for some reason I got the $2 ticket instead of two $1 ones,” he shared.
He discovered his decision had paid off as he scratched the ticket outside in his car.
“I was in utter shock at the gas station,” Jackson said. “I was like, ‘Did this really happen?’”
It’s at a moment such as this that many Lottery winners quickly pick up the phone to share their good news. But for Jackson, 25, he’d have to get a little creative.
“I forgot my cell phone, and I wanted to call my girlfriend,” he explained. “So I went to the next car because I saw that dude had a phone.”
His efforts were successful; he made the call and eventually convinced his girlfriend it wasn’t a joke.
Jackson himself was so excited that he forgot he had intended to run an errand after his stop at the gas station.
“I completely forgot I was going to go get some ‘Fix-A-Flat’ for my car, and I went straight home,” he laughed.
Plans for the prize money include catching up on bills, putting some back for Christmas and making sure he always has enough gas to make the almost daily trip between Mexico and Linn State Technical College.
Remaining prizes for “Triple Payout” total more than $7 million. The $2 Scratchers game, which officially began Aug. 29, offers a top prize of $30,000.
