Pharmacy Tech Wins $20,000 Lottery Prize
A pharmacy technician at Medley Pharmacy in Owensville credits her recent Lottery win to a daily routine. She stops for a soda every morning on her way to work and will usually buy a Scratchers ticket while she’s there. It was business as usual for Cheryl McQueen on September 29, until she revealed a $20,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery "Scary Cash" Scratchers ticket.
"I bought my morning Coke and then I looked over to the left and thought, ’Yeah, I think I’ll buy one this morning,’" began McQueen. "But I splurged and bought a $2 one, instead of a $1 (ticket), as I always do."
McQueen, 52, was running late for work, so she left Motomart, 413 Lincoln Ave. in Owensville, without scratching the ticket. After arriving at the pharmacy, she began to get excited as she played the Halloween-themed Scratchers ticket.
"I always scratch the numbers first," explained McQueen. "I get half of it scratched, and I look over and have a client to take care of. I’m thinking, ’Boy, I’ve got to get back to that ticket.’ Because I’ve already scratched the emblem, see, and I know that I’ve won double."
McQueen finished helping the customer and then resumed scratching the ticket.
"I got down to the bottom and I see $10,000. Then I remembered it was a double. The whole store erupted," recalled McQueen.
Plans for the prize money include paying some bills.
"It feels wonderful," said McQueen of the windfall. "I can pay some debt. It feels like I got a little weight lifted off. And I’ve had a couch for 20 years. I’m going to go buy me a new couch!"
is a $2 ticket that officially began Aug. 29.
