Mother's Intuition Leads to Double Win
No matter how old one gets, Laura Messer of Buckner says you should "always listen to your mom." After-all, it was her mother’s advice that led both mother and daughter each to a $3,250 Missouri Lottery Pick 4 win on Sept. 16.
The story began when Karin Blevins of Bates City read an article on the Missouri Lottery’s Web site about a Pick 4 winner who "mentioned that she always played her favorite numbers." The account prompted Blevins to follow her gut instinct and make a Pick 4 purchase using her own "special" numbers.
"Those numbers are the numbers of a house we grew up in," she began. "We had a lot of happy memories, and I thought, ’What better numbers than the house that we lived in?’"
Blevins met her daughter at QuikTrip, 4024 S. Noland Road in Independence, and she couldn’t get the story she read out of her head, so she bought her first Pick 4 ticket.
"I played, and then I turned around and gave them (numbers) to her, and she played them," she noted.
It wasn’t until later that day that Blevins remembered to check the numbers.
"I about fell out of my chair," she said, referring to the moment she called the Missouri Lottery’s hotline and found out the numbers had hit.
Blevins, a customer service representative at UMB Bank asked Messer, a recent college graduate, to meet her after work to check the numbers together.
"I met her at Hy-Vee and made her check her ticket there," added Blevins, who didn’t reveal to her daughter how much they had won.
Messer is a first-time Lottery winner, but her mother is not new to the idea of winning. In fact, approximately four years ago, she won $20,000 from the Kansas Lottery.
"I’m still in shock," said Blevins about her most recent win.
When asked what mother and daughter plan to do with the prize money, Blevins said she will put it in the bank, but she noted that her daughter has "lots of plans."
"There’s so much to do," said Messer. "So many bills to pay!"
In terms of advice for fellow Lottery players, Blevins had this to say.
"Stick to it, and enjoy it!"
