Grain Valley Man Sees "Green" with Top Prize Win

Story Photo audio icon A Grain Valley man was "shocked" when he uncovered an $88,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery "Emerald Green 8’s" Scratchers ticket on Sept. 3.  Robert Schulz, 31, was waiting in line at Casey’s General Store, 1251 AA Highway in Grain Valley, when the Lottery ticket caught his eye.

"I barely ever play, and I just decided to buy a couple of them," he began.  "The first one I scratched off, I won $5.  I cashed that in, and as I was cashing that in, I was scratching the winning ticket off.  I started noticing big numbers, but I didn’t think I won."

Schulz said he stopped scratching the winning ticket and left the store.  However, while in his car, he felt the urge to finish scratching the ticket.

"I got down to the very last one (prize line)," he shared.  "It said, ’Win all 20 prizes,’ which was a total of $88,000!"

Schulz sat in his vehicle "kind of stunned" for several minutes, but he eventually regained his composure and made his way back into the store to confirm the win.

After receiving confirmation that he won, the first-time Lottery winner hopped back into his car and headed home to his wife and two children to share the news.

"I told my wife, and we jumped around for a little bit," he added with a chuckle.

Schulz had some inspirational words for fellow Lottery players still searching for their "paydays."

"Keep trying," he began.  "Don’t give up on anything.  Dreams happen."

When asked about plans for the prize money, he added that he "hadn’t begun to think about it yet."

"I’m still in shock!"

"Emerald Green 8’s," a $5 game with a top prize of $88,000, officially began on July 18.
