Congratulations to the “Hawks Lunch Ladies,” a team of Powerball-playing friends and co-workers in food service at Hillsboro High School. The group has been recognized as the September Lottery Team of the Month as part of the Missouri Lottery’s 2009 Lottery Captains promotion, earning the group a prize package and a feature at Molottery.com.
The “Hawks Lunch Ladies,” led by team captain Lynn Otoole of De Soto, “started putting in money and hoping for the best” about a year ago during a large jackpot run. The rest of the “Hawks Lunch Ladies” team consists of: Marcie Abney, Michele Dornseif, Christa Shinault, Janice Sparkman and Dori Womack, all of Hillsboro; Patty Chilton and Dawn Reehten, both of De Soto; Judy Smith of Festus; Carole Williams of Richwoods; and Sherry Waller of Pevely.
“We usually try to put in $2 each a week,” Otoole said, allowing her to buy the team’s tickets for both the Wednesday and Saturday night Powerball drawings. She said the team favors Quick Pick for selecting their numbers and Circle K in Hillsboro for ticket purchases. So far, any money won has been “rolled over into the next pool to buy more tickets.”
To keep organization efficient, Otoole says team members “have to be consistent.”
“You have to play every week,” she said, noting that in addition to the group’s phone tree, they also socialize outside of work and would have no trouble spreading the good news in the event of a large win.
Otoole said “the hope of winning and the enjoyment of it” are the main reasons the group continues its weekly efforts.
“There’s always that one ray of hope that you’re going to win,” she said. “You never know when your ship may come in. You just never know if you’re that person. It just takes one time, and the anticipation gets your adrenaline going. We enjoy it,” she added.
“A lot of the girls would like to pay off their bills and take a vacation,” she said of the group’s dreams about hitting a big Powerball win. “I personally would like to finish my horse barn and buy a new horse trailer.”
