Nevada Woman Wins Lottery Grand Prize at State Fair

This year’s Missouri State Fair was “MOre Fun than Ever,” allowing fairgoers to enter non-winning Missouri Lottery tickets for a chance to win $100 worth of Scratchers tickets and a John Deere lawn mower valued at more than $11,000.   Jessica Medley of Nevada won the grand prize John Deere package, which included a 540 Series riding mower, 17-inch poly cart, rear bagger and hauling trailer.

Medley and her family had been on vacation, camping at the Missouri State Fair where her cousins were exhibitors.  There for the duration of the 11-day event, she said she bought a few Lottery tickets whenever possible.

“I bought $10 worth of tickets on Sunday to get a free T-shirt,” she said of the day that led to her grand-prize win.

She then entered her non-winning tickets into a second-chance daily drawing and won $100 in Scratchers tickets.  She said she joked with family and friends about Nevada always being represented with a winner in the daily drawings, but how no Nevada resident had yet taken home a Lottery grand prize from the fair.

Hearing her name called on the evening of Aug. 23 changed all that.

“I was excited,” she said.  “You never think you’re going to win.”

Friends have since teased her about whether she will start her own lawn mowing service now, but Medley said the mower will be put to good use on her family’s large farm in Nevada.

During the 2009 Missouri State Fair, 10 winners were drawn each day – Aug. 13-16 and Aug. 21-23 – to receive $100 worth of Scratchers tickets.   Those winners were then moved forward to the grand-prize drawing for the mower on the last day of the fair.
