Lighter Purchase Sparks $10,000 Win For Randolph County Woman

Story Photo Luck strikes at the most unexpected times.  That’s what B.J. Shakespeare discovered when she stopped at Break Time, 1210 Highway 24 East in Moberly, to buy a lighter.  She also decided to buy a Missouri Lottery “Emerald Green 8’s” Scratchers ticket.

“I scratched it off in the parking lot at Break Time.  At first it looked like I’d won $5,000 and I thought, ‘this is so cool.’  So I signed the back of my ticket right away.”

Shakespeare, 49, of rural Randolph County, was not sure she was seeing correctly.  She took the ticket back inside the store to make sure it was a winner.

“I asked the clerk, ‘does this mean what I think it means?’  She (the clerk) flipped out!”

After double checking the ticket, Shakespeare was pleased to discover the ticket was actually a $10,000 winner.  Shakespeare purchased another “Emerald Green 8’s” Scratchers and won $100.

“I’m just on a lucky streak, I guess,” stated Shakespeare.  “I have a Powerball ticket I bought the same day.  I hope I win the jackpot.”

Shakespeare and her husband, Bryon, will use the lottery prize to remodel their kitchen and spoil their two grandchildren.

"Emerald Green 8’s" is a $5 Scratchers game from the Missouri Lottery that offers the chance to win up to 20 times on a single ticket and a top prize of $88,000.
