Rolla Couple Claim $158,064 Show Me Cash Prize

Story Photo audio icon A Rolla couple is $158,064 richer after claiming the Missouri Lottery’s Show Me Cash jackpot from the July 11 drawing.  Phyllis Sherrell says it was her husband, Don, who found out first.

"I was upstairs cooking," she began.  "He was downstairs on the computer running the numbers.  He yelled for me."

Initially, Phyllis "didn’t pay any attention" to her husband, but after a second attempt, the first-time Lottery winner decided to see what all of the commotion was about.  To her surprise, her husband was holding the winning ticket next to the winning numbers displayed on the computer screen, and it was a match.

"I looked at him, and said, ’This can’t be right,’" she revealed.  "We have to go check at the station."

Moments later, the Sherrells were on their way back to Mobil on the Run, 1710 N. Bishop in Rolla, where they purchased the winning ticket the day of the drawing.

Even after receiving confirmation at the store, Phyllis was still in disbelief.  In fact, she said it wasn’t until claiming the ticket at the Jefferson City Lottery office that she really believed that they had won the jackpot.

"Things like that just don’t happen to people like us," she added.  "I get excited with a $2 win!"

When asked about plans for the windfall, the Sherrells said they will pay bills and take a Caribbean cruise this winter.

As for advice for fellow Lottery players, the Sherrells noted, "if it can happen to us, it can happen to anybody!"

Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000, which increases by at least $5,000 at each drawing.  The Sherrell’s ticket was the 47th Show Me Cash jackpot winning ticket sold since the game began on Sept. 8, 2008.  To date, more than $3.3 million has been awarded in the game.
