St. Peters Man Spells His Way to $50,000 Lottery Prize

An auto shop worker from St. Peters is celebrating a $50,000 Lottery win with a trip to California to see his mother, a new car and plans to pay down debt.  Dave Winder, 29, purchased his winning “Crossword” Scratchers ticket at Petro Mart, 664 Jungerman Road in St. Peters, on July 2 and claimed his prize at the Lottery’s St. Louis regional office on July 7.

“I was on my way to my friend’s house to help with some remodeling and stopped for a soda and a couple of Scratch-offs,” he said of the seemingly routine day.

Back in his car, Winder scratched the two tickets and quickly determined he was a winner – even though he initially underestimated the amount.

“At first, I missed a word,” he said of the game that awards prizes to players able to spell more than three words by matching the letters revealed on their ticket.  Thinking he had won $5,000, he “was thrilled.”

As luck would have it, sharing that thrilling news later in the evening with his girlfriend led to even more excitement.  As he showed her his winning words, he realized the one he had missed.  That last word turned his prize total to $50,000 – the game’s top prize.

“I went over it letter by letter,” he continued.  “After the 1000th time I checked, I was sure.”

According to Winder, the $3 “Crossword” game is his favorite Scratcher.  “It keeps my brain working, and it’s fun.  That and the $50,000 doesn’t hurt,” he laughed.

The current installment of “Crossword” officially began on Feb. 28 and still offers thousands of prizes ranging from $3 to $50,000.  More information on “Crossword” prizes, and all other Missouri Lottery Scratchers games, can be found at Molottery.com.
