Retired Cape Girardeau Sheriff Wins $50,000 Show Me Cash Prize
A retired Cape Girardeau sheriff is celebrating after his own numbers hit in the Missouri Lottery’s Show Me Cash drawing on May 16. Ivan McLain said the day of the drawing, he slightly altered the Quick Pick numbers the store gave him to create his own combination.
"They (store clerks) gave me a Show Me Cash ticket, and the numbers they gave me were: 2, 5, 8, 18 and 19," he began. "I’ve had so much trouble with my numbers being one number off. So I filled myself out a ticket for 1, 4, 7, 17 and 18."
McLain read the winning numbers in the newspaper the following morning. After checking his ticket against the winning numbers, he realized his decision to change the Quick Pick numbers by one digit had won him the $50,000 jackpot.
When asked about plans for the prize money, McLain said he would "pay income tax" and pay off his home.
McLain, 79, says even though he retired from the sheriff department over 30 years ago, he doesn’t intend to "slow down" anytime soon. In fact, McLain has spent the past 17 years working full time as a "people greeter" at Walmart in Cape Girardeau.
"I sit at the front door and tell everyone, ’Hi,’" he said.
McLain isn’t new to the idea of winning the Lottery, but his most recent prize is by far the largest he’s ever won.
"I won $5,000 a couple times on Powerball and $500 on Show me Cash," he added.
McLain was the 37th Show Me Cash Jackpot winner since the game began on Sept. 8.
McLain purchased his winning ticket from Huck’s Food Store, 353 S. Kingshighway St. in Cape Girardeau.
Show Me Cash
offers a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000, which increases by at least $5,000 at each drawing. To date, more than $3.3 million has been awarded in the game.
