Retired Warsaw Real Estate Agent Wins $10,000 Powerball Prize

Story Photo audio icon A Warsaw woman is planning a trip to visit family after winning a $10,000 Powerball prize from the May 13 drawing.  Vera Powell, a mother of two, grandmother of three and great-grandmother of two, said this windfall will enable her to finally meet her 1-year-old great-grandson living in Oklahoma.

According to Powell, 80, she didn’t quite believe her eyes when she checked the winning numbers against her ticket for the first time.

"I said, ’I think I won $100, yippee,’" she noted.

In fact, it wasn’t until checking her numbers at a third retail location that the first-time Lottery winner realized that she might have won more than $100.

Powell wasn’t alone on her quest to find out if her ticket was a winner.  She had her long-time friend Don Barnard with her at each retail location.

After Barnard confirmed that Powell was holding a winning ticket for the third time, they decided to make a trip to Missouri Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City the following day to claim the prize.

Powell purchased the winning ticket at Murphy USA, 102 Polk St. in Warsaw, on May 13.  Powell used Quick Pick to select the winning numbers which were:  19, 30, 32, 37 and 40.
