“A little work” and a little luck put a Carl Junction man on the road from Joplin to Springfield to redeem a winning $50,000 Missouri Lottery “Crossword” Scratchers ticket. Larry Horine bought the $3 ticket at Fastrip, 3950 E. 20th St. in Joplin, the morning of May 13 and quickly made the trip to the Lottery’s Springfield office to claim the game’s top prize.
Horine, 63, said he generally buys Scratchers tickets that don’t require much “work” (scratching), but admitted he enjoyed the challenge of discovering all 11 words contained in his winning ticket.
“I looked at that ticket I don’t know how many times, but I don’t think I can tell you a word on it,” he said, explaining how he got caught up in the game. “We had to recount the words a few times to make sure it was right. Then we wrote them on a piece of paper and counted them again just to be sure we had them all.”
“I think I’ll play it again,” he teased, having decided it was worth the effort. “In fact, my wife is out there looking at the machine wanting to buy me more scratch-offs.”
“We’re not going to plan,” he responded when asked about future uses for the unexpected prize money. “The first thing will be a dishwasher, but I hate to spend any (money) because I don’t know when I’ll have that much again at the same time. It’ll be a slow, thoughtful process.”
He does, however, have one tongue-in-cheek plan already in place. “If anyone calls and tells me they’re a relative – I’ve moved!”
“Crossword,” which officially began on Feb. 28, still has several top prizes of $50,000 remaining, as well as thousands of other prizes ranging from $3 to $5,000. Available prize information on any current Scratchers game can be found by visiting the Missouri Lottery’s Scratchers page.
