JACKPOT INFO

1. The estimated Powerball jackpot for Wednesday, Aug. 19, is $250 million.  Players can choose to receive the jackpot in 30 payments over 29 years or in one cash payment.  Jackpot winners have 60 days from the winning draw date to choose cash or annuity payment.  After 60 days, unclaimed jackpot prizes can only be claimed with the annuity payment.
   
   
2. If the winner chooses the single cash payment, he or she will receive roughly half of the advertised amount in one lump sum.  Wednesday’s cash option would bring a single player approximately $124.8 million in one payment, before taxes.
   
   
3. The Lottery withholds 25 percent federal and 4 percent state taxes for a total of 29 percent.
   
   
4. The Wednesday night draw will be the 15th drawing since the jackpot was last hit on June 27, 2009, for $25 million.  That winning ticket was purchased in West Hartford, Conn., by Rahul Patel of Newington, Conn.

7. The highest lottery jackpot awarded nationwide was a $390 million Mega Millions jackpot claimed by two ticket holders - one in Georgia and one in New Jersey – on March 6, 2007.  The second-highest jackpot was a $365 million Powerball prize (one ticket) sold in Nebraska on Feb. 18, 2006.  The third-highest jackpot was a $363 million Big Game jackpot sold (two tickets) in Illinois and Michigan on May 9, 2000.

MATCH 5 BONUS PRIZE INFO

1. The Match 5 Bonus Prize feature was added to Powerball on Oct. 6, 2002, to cap record jackpots and pay more money to more players. It is automatic and does not cost the player any additional money at the time of purchase. It is intended to pay out more cash to those players who match all five white-ball numbers (Powerball’s second-level prize). This bonus feature has been activated twice: on Oct. 19, 2005; and on Feb. 18, 2006.
   
   
2. During the last Match 5 Bonus activation in February 2006, two players in Missouri matched all five white-ball numbers drawn when the jackpot was hit on Feb. 18, 2006. Their total bonus prize ended up being $667,142 each ($200,000 regular match 5 prize plus a $467,142 bonus). Those winners were from Lake St. Louis and Carrollton.
   
   
3. The Match 5 Bonus Prize is activated only after a previous record jackpot is exceeded. In this case, the previous record jackpot was $365 million on Feb. 18, 2006, and the jackpot must exceed that amount for the Bonus prize to kick in.
   
   
4. The Match 5 Bonus Prize is paid ONLY if the jackpot is won and ONLY to the Match 5 or second-level prize winners. Otherwise, this prize continues to grow until the jackpot is hit.
   
   
5. When the jackpot is hit, the Bonus Prize Fund will be divided equally among the Match 5 winners and will be paid in cash. The prize money is paid in addition to the fixed prize of $200,000 and any amount made larger by the Power Play multiplier.
   
   
6. The exact amount of the bonus prize depends on the number of players who match all five white-ball numbers and the Bonus Prize Fund level. Right now, the Match 5 Bonus prize pool is not in effect.
   
   
7. In the "unlikely" event that the jackpot gets hit and there are no Match 5 Prize winners, the Match 5 Bonus Prize money will be paid down to those players at the third prize level, who match four white-ball numbers and the Powerball number. If this were to happen, there could be many more big winners.
   
   
8. Retailers do not earn any extra incentive money from the Match 5 Bonus Prize Pool. They get $50,000 for selling the jackpot and/or 1 percent ($2,000) for selling a Match 5 prize.

1. Of the 32 lotteries that offer Powerball, Missouri is ranked second in terms of Powerball winners with 25.  (First is Indiana with 36.)  More than $1.2 billion in Powerball jackpots alone have been won by Missouri Lottery players during the past 17 years.  During the past year, Missouri has ranked approximately fifth in terms of sales.  (PA, SC, TN, IN and MO).
   
   
2. Eight Missouri Lottery players have won a $200,000 Powerball prize during this run (since April 9, 2009).

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

Approximately 63.4 cents of Lottery purchases are returned to players in prizes, and about 26.7 cents goes toward funding for Missouri’s public elementary, secondary and higher education. Retailers who sell Lottery tickets receive approximately 6.1 cents of every dollar and about 3.8 cents is used for administrative costs.

HOW TO PLAY

• Pick five numbers between 1 and 59. Then pick one additional number between 1 and 39 as the Powerball.
• Players can win nine ways on Powerball, ranging from the jackpot down to $3.
• If your Powerball number matches the Powerball number drawn, you win a prize. Without the Powerball number, you have to match at least three of the other five numbers to win a prize.
• The overall chances of winning a prize in Powerball are 1 in 35.11.
• Powerball players can also multiply their non-jackpot winnings up to five times using the Power Play feature. For $1 extra, players can win two, three, four or five times the regular set prize amount, or an automatic $1 million for matching all five white-ball numbers and using the Power Play.  See the Powerball page for more details.
• Approximately 88 percent of Powerball players use Quick Pick to select their numbers during an average period.

TIPS

• Play early to avoid long lines.  The terminals will shut down at 8:59 p.m. Wednesday, and no one will be able to buy tickets after that time.
• Play within your means. It only takes $1 to win.
• When you buy a ticket, sign it immediately and keep it in a safe place. Like money, it is a bearer instrument.
• Be sure to check your ticket closely. Even if you don’t win the jackpot, you may have won one of the eight other prizes in the game.
