According to Debbie Stevens, she is known as “The Treat Lady” among area businesses and as “The Keno Queen” at Amvets 98, 1852 County Road 6070 in West Plains. The tasty baked goods she sells locally earned her the first title, and, on March 26, her Keno “royalty” was solidified with a $33, 107 jackpot win.
A frequent Club Keno player at Amvets, Stevens, 43, said her husband “tells anybody that comes in, ‘Just ask Debbie; she knows all about Keno.’”
To play Club Keno, players select how many different numbers (also called "spots") they want to play from 1 to 10. Twenty numbers from a field of 1-80 are chosen in a computerized random Club Keno drawing held every five minutes. Stevens won on an 8-spot wager.
Her jackpot win left her “kind of in shock,” she said, even though she first thought she “just had seven of eight” numbers. She told the bartender, “You double-check, too,” and quickly learned she had indeed won the jackpot.
By having all eight of her numbers included in the numbers drawn, Stevens earned the base prize of $10,000, plus a share of the progressive jackpot.
“Everybody was freaking out,” she said. “It was Bingo Night, too, so they were sticking their heads in, too, when they heard all the screaming.”
Stevens plans to put her winnings “in the bank and kind of be careful with it - especially with today’s economy.”
