For Michael Stinnette of Butler, trying a different game worked to his advantage when he uncovered the $25,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery “Red Hot Cherries” Scratchers ticket.
“Sometimes one strikes me over another,” he said about his decision to purchase the new game over the other tickets he saw on display. “It was a newer game, and we hadn’t done anything on it yet. It was a whim thing, for giggles.”
The giggles continued as Stinnette, 45, and his wife, Joan, scratched off the ticket in the car before she headed off to work.
“She scratched off the top half; I did the bottom,” he said. “We stared at it at least 10 minutes in the car. It was unbelievable!”
The couple has already given some thought as to where they should spend their unexpected winnings.
“We had that storm in June that tore us up pretty good. We still have some work to do,” he said. He added that he and Joan just got married in June, as well, and “hadn’t had a honeymoon yet.”
Stinnette purchased his winning “Red Hot Cherries” ticket - a $2 game which officially began on Feb. 28 - at Caseys, 201 N. Orange St. in Butler, on March 18.
