Joplin Man Wins $100,000 Lottery Prize
A detailer at Frank Fletcher Toyota in Joplin requested off work on Jan. 30 to make a trip to the Missouri Lottery’s Springfield office for a very good reason - he won the top prize on a Missouri Lottery "Big Money" Scratchers ticket the previous evening.
Shaun Horner, 23, asked his girlfriend not to scratch the ticket that they purchased on Jan. 29 at Cody’s Convenience Store, 1631 E. Fourth St. in Joplin, until they returned home.
"We sat on the couch together and scratched off the ticket," began Horner. "The first prize we saw was for $5,000. By the end of it, we won $100,000!"
According to Horner, his girlfriend started screaming, while he remained speechless for several minutes.
"We had put our baby to bed before scratching the ticket, but after he heard his mom screaming, he woke up, and then we all screamed together in the living room," said Horner.
One of the first people to learn of the win was Horner’s brother. However, Horner had to convince him he wasn’t joking.
"I called my brother and told him over the phone, but he said he wanted to see for himself," explained Horner. "He came over that night and almost passed out when he saw the ticket."
Horner, a first-time Lottery winner, plans to purchase a "more reliable car" and a new home with his prize money.
"Big Money," a $5 game with a top prize of $100,000, officially began on Dec. 10.
