Kansas City Woman Wins $5,000 on Crossword

Story Photo audio icon It was just another day for Mikella Smith of Kansas City.  She made her regular stop at In & Out, 1007 Main St. in Kansas City, on Feb. 11 and picked up a Missouri Lottery "Crossword" Scratchers ticket.  She uncovered a $5,000 prize while scratching the ticket on her way to work.

"I had to look at it three or four times before I thought it was a winner," said Smith.

Smith returned to the convenience store to check her ticket and was told she would need to claim the prize at the regional Lottery office.  She made that trip on Feb. 13.

Smith explained that she likes the "Crossword" and "Bingo" Scratchers tickets best.

"It’s kind of nice to be involved a little bit, scratch a little while, instead of just a number," said Smith.

As for plans for the money, Smith indicated that she would get her car fixed and put some money back for a summer vacation.

"Not anyplace far," said Smith.  "Like a bed and breakfast maybe, if the money is still there and not used for something else."

"Crossword" is a $3 game with a top prize of $50,000.  Players reveal letters which are used to spell words.  Prizes are based on the number of words that can be spelled on each ticket.
