Favorite Game Pays Off to the Tune of $250,000 for Greenfield Grandmother

Norma Shepas, 62, of Greenfield is a fan of the Missouri Lottery’s “yellow ticket” – otherwise known as the “$250,000 Mega Cash” Scratchers ticket.  It’s a game she plays “all the time” and, on Jan. 21, she was rewarded with a $250,000 top prize.

Shepas laughed as she recalled the routine trip to the store with her husband and son that led to her winning moment.

“I told him, ‘Don’t buy me any more of those yellow tickets,’” she explained of her instructions to her son as he perused Scratchers options at the check-out counter.  She reasoned that since she had “won $200 about a week ago” on the same game, she should try to spread her luck to something different.  Her son, however, knowing his mother’s fondness for “$250,000 Mega Cash,” bought her three tickets anyway.

As she scratched the first ticket and her prize began to be revealed, she told her husband, Richard, “I’m not sure this is real; look at it.”

“We were quite shocked and quite pleased,” she said of the final revelation.

According to the grandmother of seven, “We plan on paying bills and giving some (of the winnings) to the kids and grandkids.”

In light of her recent win, Shepas said her personal Scratchers strategy has evolved.

“Stick to the same ticket,” she suggested.  “You have better luck than just jumping around.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Northside Package, 508 Lake St. in Greenfield.

"$250,000 Mega Cash" is a $10 game which officially began on Jan. 31, 2007.  Shepas is the 21st player to win the game’s top prize of $250,000.
