Jefferson City Sergeant Cruises Into a $10,000 Prize

Story Photo A sergeant for the Missouri Department of Corrections on the brink of retirement received a $10,000 going away gift on Jan. 26.  Joe Durham, 62, purchased a Missouri Lottery "4 Million Dollar Cash Bonanza" Scratchers ticket from Schnucks Market, 1801 Missouri Blvd. in Jefferson City, only one hour before claiming the ticket at the Jefferson City Lottery office.

"I was just coming off my shift at the prison – I work 11 p.m. until 7 a.m., so I stopped to get a few things at the store on my way home," said Durham.

Durham scratched his ticket off in the car and quickly made his way home to his wife of 34 years.

"The first thing Luan (wife) said to me was, ’Are we going on another cruise now?’" revealed Durham.

According to Durham, he and his wife, who works as a critical care nurse in Jefferson City, frequently take cruises, and their favorite destination is the Caribbean.

"This win will pay for our cruise this year," said Durham.

Aside from making plans for the upcoming cruise, Durham is looking forward to "not making many plans" after he retires this year.

"I’m going to take more cruises and do a lot of fishing after I retire," explained Durham.

"4 Million Dollar Cash Bonanza,’’ a $20 Scratchers game with a top prize of $4 million, officially began on Jan. 26.
