Memphis Cattle Farmer and School Teacher Win $20,000 Prize

Story Photo A Memphis man and his wife are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary early this year with a $20,000 windfall.  Steve Caldwell, a cattle farmer, noted that his actual anniversary with his wife Debbi, an art teacher, isn’t until next month, but the recent win will be a "great way to celebrate."

According to Caldwell, who purchased the winning Missouri Lottery "$250,000 Mega Cash" Scratchers ticket from Casey’s General Store, 110 N. Clay St. in Memphis, he has an unusual method of scratching his Lottery tickets.

"I don’t scratch the tickets in order," began Caldwell.  "I start from the bottom and work my way up, but sometimes I start in the middle, too."

Caldwell began scratching his ticket while sitting in his truck outside of Casey’s General Store.  After realizing he had "won something," he made his way back into the store to finish scratching the ticket.  It was inside that Caldwell learned he was $20,000 richer.

"I showed the ticket to the girl that sold it to me, and I gave her $100 right there," noted Caldwell.

Caldwell, a father of three, noted that the prize money will come in handy because he has one daughter with two grandchildren, one daughter in college at Iowa State and another daughter ready to start college.

"This money sure helps and could go in so many different directions," said Caldwell.  "Most of it will go to education, bills and probably a car for one of the kids."

"$250,000 Mega Cash" is a $10 game that features a top prize of $250,000.  The ticket began on Jan.31, 2007, and has several top prizes remaining.
