St. Peters Man Spells His Way to $50,000 Top Prize

Story Photo An evening of "hanging out with friends" turned out to be more than a night out for one St. Peters man.  Derrick Sargis, 22, stopped at Quiktrip, 1500 Zumbehl in St. Charles, before heading to meet friends on Dec. 27.

According to Sargis, a specific Lottery ticket was "poking out" of the dispenser at the store, which made him feel inclined to purchase the "Crossword" Scratchers game during his last-minute stop.  Sargis wound up with a Missouri Lottery ticket worth $50,000 nestled in the pocket of his jacket, but he didn’t learn that until days later.

"I actually forgot I had bought the ticket," recalled Sargis.  "I put it in my pocket, but didn’t remember it was in there for a few days."

When Sargis finally pulled out his Lottery ticket, he quickly realized he was one "lucky man" for more than one reason.

"I saw that I won $50,000 and couldn’t believe it, but I also couldn’t believe that I forgot about the ticket for two days!" exclaimed Sargis.  "I am really glad the ticket was still in my pocket."

Sargis was at home when he scratched off his ticket and discovered he held a "winner" in his hands.

"I ran downstairs and told my parents that I won $50,000," said Sargis.  "They didn’t believe me, so I sat down with my mom and showed her the ticket."

After convincing his mother that he actually won the Lottery, Sargis noted that his entire family was in a state of disbelief.

"Nobody could believe it - everyone was shocked," revealed Sargis.  "The only thing anyone could think of to say was, ’Congratulations.’"

The win came as an even bigger surprise to Sargis, who noted he hadn’t had time to think about any concrete plans for his prize money.

"I haven’t really thought about it yet, but maybe I will buy a new car or truck," said Sargis.

“Crossword,” a $3 game with a top prize of $50,000, officially began on Aug. 30.
