Kirksville Man Wins $10,000 Lottery Prize

Story Photo A Kirksville man’s decision to "try his luck" on a Missouri Lottery "Season’s Greetings" Scratchers ticket paid off on Nov. 6.  Derek Ayers of Kirksville was surprised, but happy to see that his ticket was a winner.

"I usually don’t buy Lottery tickets," said Ayers.  "I just felt like trying my luck with this one."

Ayers, who purchased his winning ticket from Ice House, 202 E. Illinois St. in Kirksville, didn’t find out he was a winner until later that evening.

"I brought the ticket home," said Ayers.  "I thought someone was playing a trick on me when I saw that I won $10,000.  I turned the ticket over to make sure it wasn’t one of those joke tickets that say you have to claim your prize in the North Pole."

Ayers, a first-time Lottery winner, received confirmation that he held a valid ticket after returning to Ice House to ask the clerk for verification.

"I really couldn’t believe it, even after hearing it from the clerk," said Ayers.

When asked about plans for his unexpected winnings, Ayers, 20, noted that he planned to pay bills.

"I’m just happy to have won," said Ayers.  "I don’t have any other big plans right now."

"Season’s Greetings," a $10 game with a top prize of $500,000, officially began on Oct. 25.  To learn more about "Season’s Greetings" or any of the other Missouri Lottery Scratchers games, visit Molottery.com.
