$10,000 Win Changes Luck for Jefferson City Man

Story Photo Cortez Smith Sr., Jefferson City, had a change of luck after discovering he won $10,000 on a Missouri Lottery “Ruby Red 7’s” Scratchers ticket.  Smith, 30, bought his winning ticket on Aug. 27, at Schulte’s Fresh Foods, 1904 Southwest Blvd. in Jefferson City.

Smith, a self-employed father of nine, recently endured a tragedy when he lost his home to a fire.

“Our house burnt down this summer.  So, this is a really exciting win for us.  I plan on looking for a new house for my family this week,” said Smith.

According to Smith, the winning ticket seemed too good to be true.

“I scratched the numbers off and thought I won $150, but then I kept scratching and saw $500 and then another $500 and another,” said Smith.

In addition to purchasing a home, Smith, a first-time Lottery winner, plans to give 10 percent of his winnings to his church.

“Ruby Red 7’s,” a $5 game, officially began on May 3.
