De Soto Vet and Wife Claim Half of $4.9 Million Lotto Jackpot
A De Soto Army veteran and his wife are celebrating his 61st birthday in style after winning half of the $4.9 million Missouri Lottery Lotto jackpot for the Aug. 2 drawing. Philip and Lisa Bequette hold one of two winning jackpot tickets from the drawing; each ticket holder will receive $2,450,000 before taxes if they choose the annuity or $1.5 million cash before taxes if they choose the lump sum payment.
Philip Bequette, who also goes by “Joe,” told Lottery officials when he claimed his prize on Aug. 5, that doing a news conference to announce his win on his 61st birthday, which also happens to be 8-8-08, will be special.
“I felt elated,” he said about finding out he held the winning ticket.
Bequette said his wife called him Tuesday morning from work at Walmart and said that a friend told her that someone hit the Lotto jackpot with a ticket purchased at AMVETS Post 48, 1075 Amvets Drive in De Soto. Knowing they bought Lotto tickets there, she asked him if he had checked their tickets. When he called and got the winning numbers, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. His $3 Lotto ticket had those winning numbers.
Bequette said he felt fortunate when he recalled what happened when he bought the ticket the night of the drawing.
“When we asked for a $5 Lotto ticket, she (clerk) gave me a $5 Powerball ticket by accident,” said Bequette. “So I kept the Powerball ticket, and said, ‘just give me $3 in Lotto,’ and it (the winning combination) was the last one.”
Bequette and his wife, Lisa, 44, said they are going to use their windfall to pay off some small debts and make some good investments.
“I’ve got a date with my banker when I leave here,” he said after placing his claim at the St. Louis Lottery office on Aug. 5.
Bequette also plans to buy a new four-wheel drive Dodge Dakota pickup truck with his prize money.
Philip Bequette, who served in the Army from 1965-1968, retired from Chrysler’s Parts Division in Hazelwood in 2004, after 36 years of service. Lisa Bequette is the manager of Walmart’s photo lab in De Soto.
The other jackpot ticket for the Aug. 2 Lotto drawing was sold at Apple Market, 3719 Independence Ave. in Kansas City. The winning numbers were: 4, 15, 18, 23, 30 and 40. Bequette used Quick Pick to let the computer select their winning numbers.
In addition to Bequette’s prize, AMVETS Post 48 will receive a check equal to 1 percent of the prize amount - which is $24,500 - for selling the winning ticket.
The Bequettes’ prize is the 177th Lotto jackpot and the 257th overall jackpot ticket sold since the Lottery began in 1986.
