Columbia Co-Workers Win $200,000 Powerball Prize

Story Photo audio icon A group of 24 co-workers from Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company in Columbia are celebrating after they won $200,000 playing the Missouri Lottery’s Powerball game.  One of the tickets the group purchased matched the five white-ball numbers drawn during the March 8 Powerball drawing.   The co-workers will receive approximately $8,333 each prior to taxes being withheld.
Marilyn Nowlin, 53,  the organizer of the group, said many members of the group have been playing together for quite a few years.  She said participants in the group contribute $2 for each of the two drawings held each week.
"We do a lot more when it’s higher," said Debbie Nichols, another member of the group.  "She makes a copy of all the tickets, and she gives each one of us a sheet, so it was easy to go through and circle the ones.  She circled another, then another…."
"I couldn’t believe it," Nowlin added.  "Everyone thought I was lying to them.  I said, ’No, I’m not lying.  We actually won $200,000.’"
In addition to Nowlin and Nichols, both of Columbia, the lucky group of co-workers include:  Christopher Campbell, Ashland; Margaret Plotner, Centralia; Willie Stokes, Tekeste Aster, Nil Quk, Leatchena Daugherty, Cheryl Biggerstaff, Kathy Sapp, Vincent Key, Cheryl Wilson, Ramona Powell, Kieng Lay, Sharon Lorton, Huon Nguyen, Thu Le, Hanh Nguyen, Nhan Huynh, , Emma Nichols, Maria Mendez, Stefanos Tewolde, Khanh Truong and Pam Elias, all of Columbia.
Members of the group said they plan to use their share of the prize money for a variety of things including to pay bills, make house repairs, take a vacation, buy a big-screen television, invest and to put into their savings accounts.
Nowlin purchased the winning ticket at Fast Lane Route B, 2116 Paris Road in Columbia.  She let the computer Quick Pick the numbers on the winning ticket.  The winning numbers were:  17, 29, 31, 34 and 49.
Nowlin said the group plans to continue to play Powerball, including buying tickets for the $230 million Powerball drawing on March 12.
This ticket was the 92nd second-level winning Powerball ticket since the game redesign on Aug. 28, 2005.
