Calhoun Woman Wins $4 Million Instantly, the Largest Instant Prize Ever
A Calhoun woman is the first winner of the biggest Scratchers prize ever awarded in the Missouri Lottery’s history. Sarina Brockert, 40, won the $4 million prize when she scratched off a $20 "4 Million Dollar Cash Bonanza" Scratchers ticket on Feb. 7.
Brockert stopped by Slugger’s 66 Service, 1805 E. Ohio in Clinton, on the morning of Feb. 7 after getting off work. She redeemed a winning "4 Million Dollar Cash Bonanza" ticket for $20 and instead of taking the cash, she purchased another Scratchers ticket from the same game.
"I saw that I got one number that matched, and I thought, ’I got my money back,’ but then I started scratching the prize amount and I saw three zeros and a comma, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing," Brockert said.
Brockert called her best friend, Shelly, on the way home to tell her the news.
"She called and said, ’You have to go for a ride with me,’" Shelly said. "She didn’t tell me what it was about until she got to my house about an hour later. She walked in the door and was shaking, and then she brought the ticket around from her back. I couldn’t believe it."
Brockert sent a text message to her son, who is a student at the University of Missouri-Rolla, asking him to call her because, "I think I have a big surprise."
"He’s working along with going to school, so when he got home, he fell asleep," Brockert said. "He didn’t call me until that evening. It took a while for it to sink-in what I was telling him."
Brockert, who works as an auto palletizer operator for Schreiber Foods in Clinton, said that she plans to use her money to pay off some bills and possibly buy a flea market/antique mall in Warsaw at which she currently works part-time.
"She’s been saying, ’When, not if, she wins the Lottery, she’s going to buy that business," her friend, Shelly, said with a laugh. "She just always knew she was going to win."
Brockert said she also plans to pay her son’s college expenses and possibly do some traveling.
The $20 game, “4 Million Dollar Cash Bonanza,” officially began on Jan. 26. It is the Lottery’s first $20 game and offers the highest prize payout ever on a Scratchers game. It includes four $4 million prizes and 16 $1 million prizes. Brockert is the 25th instant Missouri Lottery millionaire and the 245th millionaire overall.
