St. Charles Man Wins $50,000 Tax-Paid Lottery Prize

Story Photo Keith Berdak, St. Charles, won $50,000 tax paid* when he matched all five numbers in the Oct. 25 Midday SHOW ME 5 Paydown drawing. Berdak selected his winning numbers. The winning numbers from the Oct. 25 Midday drawing were: 1, 16, 19, 21 and 26.
"I actually had a $250 winning ticket I cashed last night, so I knew someone had one," Berdak, 52, said when claimed his prize on Oct. 26.
When the top prize is not won in SHOW ME 5 Paydown, the prize is "paid down" to the other prize levels. Since his second-level winning ticket only paid $250, instead of the $750 prize when the top prize is not won, Berdak knew there was a top-prize winner. It didn’t take him long to realize he held the winning ticket.
"Normally, I don’t get stunned," Berdak said. "Last night, I was rattled."
Berdak bought his winning ticket at Pearce Conoco, 401 E. Pearce Blvd. in Wentzville. He said he plans to go back to the store and give the clerk some money from his prize. He writes the clerks’ names on his tickets when he purchases them, so he can go back and give them a gift when he wins.
"I always give a prize to the clerk," Berdak said.
Berdak is going to use some of his prize money for home remodeling, including a deck and new windows.
To date, 129 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since the game began on Nov. 6, 2000.

* The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, the winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 tickets match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
