Holts Summit Man Wins $50,000 Playing 'Crossword'

Story Photo A Holts Summit man is planning to make some home improvements after he won $50,000 playing the Missouri Lottery’s "Crossword" Scratchers game. Stanley Kliethermes purchased his winning ticket on Oct. 12 at Bee Line Snack Shop, 162 W. Simon Blvd. in Holts Summit.
"I called my wife up, and told her that I thought I had won $500," Kliethermes, 52, said. "I scratched some more, and I called her back and told her that I think I goofed up. I missed two letters. I scratched some more, and I said, ’You’re not going to believe this. I think I won $5,000.’ Then I said, ’Wait a minute, let me count again.’ I said, ’It’s $50,000!’"
Kliethermes, who works at ABB Inc., said he and his wife, Mary Kay, plan to use their winnings to make some home improvements, to fix up his truck and to put the rest in the bank.
"I was just shaking after I scratched it off," he said. "I thought, ’There’s no way, not me.’ But, it really does happen. It happened to me. It’s unbelievable!"
"Crossword," a $3 ticket, officially began on Sept. 1.
