St. Louis Man Wins $100,000 Tax-Paid

Story Photo A St. Louis man said he couldn’t describe his feelings when he realized that two of his SHOW ME 5 Paydown tickets matched the winning numbers that were drawn in the Aug. 29 Midday drawing to win $100,000 tax paid.* Mark Abbott, 73, selected the set of winning numbers on two separate tickets and won the $50,000 top prize on each one. Abbott said he was working in his backyard on Aug. 29 when he decided to call the winning numbers hot line shortly after the drawing. "I called my son and told him that I thought I had it," Abbott said. "I can’t describe how it felt. I sure didn’t expect it." Abbott, a father of five, said his son notified other family members about the win. He purchased his winning tickets at Normandy Amoco, 7430 Natural Bridge in St. Louis. He selected his winning numbers using family birthdays. The winning numbers were: 6, 14, 21, 23 and 27. Abbott plans to use his prize money to catch up on bills and to use for his retirement. "I still find it hard to believe, but I really do appreciate it," Abbott said.

** The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.54. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
