Columbia Teen Wins $50,000 Lottery Prize

Story Photo A late night run for fast food paid off big for a 19-year-old Columbia woman after she won $50,000 playing a Missouri Lottery "Crossword" Scratchers ticket. Katelyn Schenewerk said she and a friend stopped by Phillips MPC, 501 E. Nifong Blvd. in Columbia, on the way to a local fast food restaurant on Aug. 21. While there, Schenewerk’s friend bought three "Crossword" Scratchers tickets, and Schenewerk bought the following two tickets. The first ticket Schenewerk scratched turned out to be worth $50,000, the game’s top prize.
"I told her (Schenewerk’s friend) to write down the words as I spelled it out," Schenewerk said. "We checked it and checked it and checked it. We couldn’t believe it."
Schenewerk, who recently started as a waitress, said she hopes to use her winnings to buy a truck and a laptop computer. She planned to put the rest of her winnings into savings for her college education.
The $3 game, "Crossword," officially began on March 1.
