Independence Area Co-Workers Named Lottery Team of the Month

Story Photo Congratulations to "The Gang" of Independence! The group was recognized as the Lottery Team of the Month for August as part of the Missouri Lottery’s 2007 Lottery Captains promotion. The promotion awards a Lottery players group with prizes and a feature at Molottery.com each month during the calendar year.
"The Gang" is a group of 24 co-workers, spread out across three buildings at Lake City Army Ammunition in Independence, who play Powerball together. Of the 24 current members, 20 members have been playing together since the group formed more than two years ago. The team only lets new members join after a jackpot has been won. The members are: Beverly Keller (team captain), Mamie Stigler, Linda Nickelson, Kathy Free and Fran January, all of Kansas City; Bridget Zacharias, Holden; Judy Cramer, June Scaggs, Azar Clark and Walter Johnson, all of Blue Springs; Rocky Garcia and Mindy and Gary McCall, all of Independence; Julie Nickson, Grandview; Otha Wheeler, Raytown; Christina Desselle and Glendora Allen, both of Richmond; Joni Johnston, Oak Grove; Kathy Stapleton, Buckner; Charlie Stout, Sugar Creek; Shelly Todd, Lexington; Robin Limberg and Zona Ducan, both of Odessa; and Butch White, Corder.
Each member puts in $1 each for the Wednesday and Saturday drawings. Keller buys the tickets for both of the week’s drawings every Sunday. The group uses Quick Pick to let the computer choose their numbers.
Keller buys the team’s tickets from two QuikTrip locations ? 17815 E. 39th in Independence and 1225 S. Noland Road in Independence.
"We have $2 worth of dreams each week," Keller said of the reason the team keeps playing each week. "The thought of us winning big (keeps us playing). Somebody has to win." The team usually puts their prize money back into the pool to buy more tickets. They won $100 one time and kept it to play after the jackpot reached $100 million.
After two years of keeping the team organized, Keller has some advice for other team captains. She suggested having the team members pay for all of the drawings at the beginning of the month. She said it’s only $8-$10 per player, and it’s easier for everybody.
