Versailles Man Uncovers $5,000 Lottery Prize

Story Photo Kenny Coffman, Versailles, and his wife, Kathy, are planning to do something special to celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary after he uncovered $5,000 on the Missouri Lottery Scratchers game "Crossword." Coffman, 67, purchased his ticket at Merten’s Mini-Mart, Highway 5 South in Versailles, on his way to Jefferson City on June 7.
Coffman bought one "Crossword" ticket for himself and a different Scratchers ticket for his wife. While his wife was in Tuesday Morning shopping, he stayed in the car and scratched his ticket.
"I thought I won $500," Coffman said. "I got to looking and thought it was $5,000."
After uncovering his prize, Coffman went into the store to get his wife so they could go to Lottery Headquarters to redeem his ticket while they were in Jefferson City.
"I could hardly talk to her," Coffman said. "She thought I was sick."
"It’s the fastest I’ve ever been in and out of Tuesday Morning," Kathy Coffman said.
Coffman doesn’t have any definite plans for his prize money, but he will probably use some of it to do something special for his anniversary.
"We wanted to do something for our anniversary," Coffman said. "This is going to help out a little bit."
"Crossword," a $3 Scratchers game, officially began on March 1.
