Bridgeton Woman Wins 'Big Money' For College

Karen Brookes, Bridgeton, was reluctantly shopping for groceries on Jan. 21 when she decided to "treat" herself to two $5 "Big Money" Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets. Her tickets turned out to be quite a treat when she uncovered the game?s top prize of $100,000.
Brookes, 47, started scratching her tickets when she got home from the store. After she had uncovered $20,000, she called her husband and told him to come home. Meanwhile, her 11-year-old daughter kept adding up the prizes on the ticket and discovered that Brookes had actually won $100,000.
"She knows it’s her college fund," Brookes said.
Brookes plans to use her prize to start college funds for her daughter and her 13-year-old son. She said the family had begun worrying about college tuition, but now they are "totally relieved." T
he family plans to use some of their prize for fun, too.
"Maybe a vacation is in order this summer," Brookes said.
Brookes purchased her winning ticket at Dierbergs, 11481 Olive Street Road in Creve Coeur.
The $5 "Big Money" game officially began on Dec. 23, 2006.
