West Plains Dad Wins $25,000 Holiday Cash

Story Photo audio icon A West Plains dad is going to make his two teenage daughters’ holiday season brighter after he uncovered a $25,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery "Season’s Greetings" Scratchers game. Vernon Bell, 50, said he plans to share some of his prize money with them.
"I’ve got two girls," said Bell, when he claimed his prize Nov. 6 at the Lottery’s Springfield office. "I’m going to let them have a little bit of it for buying Christmas and stuff like they want to buy."
Bell said he and his wife, Debra, also plan to put some of the money in savings for the girls’ upcoming college costs. Their daughters are currently 14 and 17 years old.
Bell, who is a branch manager for Wonder Bread, purchased his winning ticket Nov. 5 at Hammond Station, 4749 Highway 160 in West Plains, when he stopped in to talk to his friend, Alan.
"A friend of mine runs it, and I was down there talking to him," said Bell.
Bell said this is the second time he has won a large Lottery prize at the location. Last Christmas eve, he uncovered a $10,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket.
"It was basically about the same way," said Bell. "I was just in there goofing around, and I bought one (ticket)."
"Season’s Greetings," a $2 game, officially started on Oct. 28.
