RICHARD PETTY TO APPEAR IN THAYER

Racing fans, start your engines! NASCAR champion Richard Petty will be traveling to Thayer to make an appearance at Pump N Pantry, Highway 63 & 142 Highway, the grand-prize winner of the Missouri Lottery’s Green Thunder Retailer Sales Contest. Known as the "King of NASCAR," Petty will be visiting the southern Missouri border town from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 2. Pump N Pantry customers will have the chance to get autographs and photographs with Petty during his appearance, and his race car will be on exhibit at the retail location from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The Missouri Lottery will also have a booth in the store’s parking lot complete with a wheel spin and prizes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. "The employees are pretty excited, and so are the customers," said Terry Matherly, president of Pump N Pantry. "We’re in the middle of some big racing country down here, so there’s already a lot of interest in Missouri and Arkansas." In addition to Petty’s appearance, Pump N Pantry also won a DAYTONA 500 trip package for four to see the DAYTONA 500 race and visit Orlando theme parks in February 2000. To win the grand prize, Pump N Pantry increased their weekly Scratchers sales base by $10,840, the most of any Lottery retail location in the state. "Our crew really works at it," Matherly said. "We have a hotline on an answering machine to give the numbers, so customers have access to the winning numbers almost immediately." In addition to the grand-prize winner, five retail locations won first-place prizes of an Orlando/DAYTONA 500 trip package, and 50 retail locations won the second-place prize of an official stock car racing jacket.
