Shrewsbury Couple Finds Fifth Ticket Worth $1 Million

audio icon An auto parts warehouse worker is planning to replace his 30-year-old truck after buying a Missouri Lottery ticket worth $1 million on Sept. 19. Jonathon "Jon" Schwab, 54, said he bought two tickets from the "$100 Million Cash Spectacular" game when he stopped at QuikTrip, 8000 Watson Road in St. Louis, to get gas. He took the two $10 tickets home, handed one to his wife, Betty, to scratch, and he played the other ticket. Jon’s ticket turned out to be worth $10, and Betty uncovered a $1 million top prize.
"She (Betty) says I’ve got to buy a new truck," said Jon Schwab. "She thinks my 30-year-old truck is getting too old."
Schwab said in addition to the truck, the couple plans to use the prize money to pay off all their bills, including their home mortgage.
"We’re going to give some to the families," he said. "We’ll pass a little bit out so everybody can get some.
"We’re going to probably take at least one vacation; maybe a cruise," he added.
Schwab is the fifth person - all from the St. Louis area - to uncover a top prize in the "$100 Million Cash Spectacular" game. On Sept. 29, 2005, Steve Shepard of Mineral Point won a $1 million top prize; on Jan. 20, Alfred Meyer of Florissant uncovered a top prize; on March 9, Barb and Ted Lindner of Defiance won a $1 million top prize; and on Aug. 19, Bessie Jones, 52, of Charlack, won a $1 million top prize in the game.
The "$100 Million Cash Spectacular" game, which officially started on Sept. 10, 2005, has one of the highest payouts in the Lottery’s history and offers more than $102.5 million in cash prizes, including 10 top prizes of $1 million. More than 75.14 percent of the $10 game’s sales will be returned to players as prizes.
To date, 219 Missouri Lottery tickets worth $1 million or more have been sold in the Lottery’s 20 years of sales. Of those winning tickets, 14 were from Scratchers games, five of which have been from the "$100 Million Cash Spectacular" game. There are still five prizes of $1 million left in the game.
