Cross Timbers Woman Uncovers $50,000 Top Prize
Jennifer Helmig, 23, got a big surprise when she went to cash her winning Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. Helmig, Cross Timbers, thought she had matched 10 words playing "Crossword" to win the $5,000 prize. When she went to redeem her ticket, she was excited to learn she had missed a word.
"I had to grab onto the counter because I was shaking," Helmig said.
Helmig had actually matched 11 words to win the "Crossword" top prize - $50,000.
Helmig was at Express Lane, 1109 E. Battlefield in Springfield, on Aug. 15 waiting to meet a date. She passed the time while she waited by playing "Crossword" and chatting with her friend who was working there.
"I kept counting the words as I went," Helmig said. "I asked my friend if he could cash the ticket, so he scanned it. He told me I had to come to a Lottery office to cash it. He said I must have won $5,000."
Helmig just finished the pharmacy technician program at Vatterott College in July. She plans to use her prize to pay off her student loans. She also wants to go to Branson.
"Crossword," a $3 Scratchers game, officially began on Aug. 5.
