High Ridge Man Receives $100,000 in Birthday Card

Story Photo audio icon A roofer from High Ridge received an incredible birthday gift from his wife’s aunt when he uncovered a $100,000 prize on a "Harley-Davidson®" Scratchers ticket that she included in his birthday card. Shawn Keeven, who turned 32 on July 26, said she gave him the birthday card with one Scratchers ticket inside. He played the ticket that day, but didn’t think it was a winner.
"I had it in my car for the past three or four days," he said. "I just decided that I’m going to go ahead and call these people (Lottery) and just see, maybe, just to find out (if he won)."
Keeven said he pulled over on the side of the road on his way home from work on Aug. 9 to make the call, and he couldn’t believe his ears.
"I just freaked out," he said. "I just started screaming and yelling, and I was like, ’Are you kidding me?’ And she said, ’No, you just won $100,000.’"
Keeven said he and his wife, Laura, plan to use the prize money to pay off their cars and put the rest in the bank to use as a down payment to buy a house next year. He said they may also use some of the money for their late honeymoon to Florida in September. The couple was married in May.
"Instead of having to drive down there, we’ll fly down there and rent a car," said Keeven.
As for the aunt who gave him the ticket, Keeven said he would buy her anything she wants, but he doubts she will take him up on it.
"She’s a real sweet lady; a real nice lady," he said. "She’s done a lot of stuff for us, and now she done this for us."
