Ste. Genevieve Couple Wins Family's Second Lotto Jackpot

Story Photo video icon For the first time in Missouri Lottery history, a Ste. Genevieve family had Lottery "lightning" strike twice after a couple found out they won the $5.5 million Missouri Lotto jackpot on July 26. Michael "Mike" and Susan "Sue" Palmer said they couldn’t believe they won a jackpot prize, especially since Susan’s father, Ernie Weiler Sr., had won a $2.8 million Missouri Lotto jackpot almost exactly four years ago on July 31. Weiler passed away on May 9, 2006.

"Our employee told me on Friday (July 28) that someone at Casey’s bought the winning jackpot ticket," said Mike Palmer, 47, who owns M & S Packing in Ste. Genevieve. "I said, ’Really? I might be a millionaire.’"

When he checked his Lotto ticket and realized he was the big winner, Palmer said he started shaking.

Palmer said he and his wife, Sue, 45, plan to buy some property with their prize winnings. They also plan to pay off student loans, since two of their three children are in college.

"We may take a couple of short vacations; maybe buy a fishing and ski boat," Palmer added.

As for sharing with the kids, Palmer teased, "I don’t want to spoil them too much right off the bat."

Sue and Mike Palmer (top left) with Ernie Weiler Sr.Palmer said he bought the winning ticket on July 26, the day of the drawing. He said he first stopped at Rhodes 101 Stop in Ste. Genevieve, where his father-in-law bought his winning ticket four years ago, but the Lottery terminal was down. So Palmer went to Casey’s, 21998 State Highway 32 in Ste. Genevieve, and bought $5 worth of Lotto plays there.

Though Palmer and Weiler both used Quick Pick to select their winning-number combinations, three of the winning numbers happened to be the same. Palmer’s winning numbers were 16, 24, 31, 34, 36 and 43. Weiler’s winning numbers were 13, 15, 24, 31, 36 and 41.

In addition to the Palmer’s jackpot prize, Casey’s will receive a bonus equal to 1 percent of the jackpot - $55,000 - for selling the winning Lotto ticket.

Along with Palmer and Weiler, one other Ste. Genevieve resident has won a Missouri Lottery jackpot, also in the month of July. On July 17, 2004, Paul Koller won $1 million with a free Lotto ticket he received at the Dew Drop Inn in Bloomsdale as a prize from a previous Lotto purchase.

To date, 216 jackpot tickets worth $1 million or more have been sold in the Lottery’s 20 years of sales. Of those tickets sold, 159 were from the Lotto game.
