Instead of cruising in his patrol car, one Festus police sergeant is driving around Crystal City house hunting after winning $2.8 million in the Jan. 23 Missouri Lotto drawing. Conrad Aubuchon, 45, of Crystal City said he’s never owned a home and is looking forward to doing so since his win. Aubuchon discovered his good fortune on Tuesday, when he was at a convenience store and decided to check his lottery tickets. "I had six different tickets that I ran through a Check-A-Ticket," Aubuchon said. "One of them came up a winner, so I handed it to a clerk thinking I had a free ticket or something. The clerk ran it through the terminal and then stepped back and said, ’Oh, my.’ All I could see was $28,000. I said, ’Don’t tell me I won $28,000?’ He said, ’No, you won $2.8 million!’" The win will bring Aubuchon a check for approximately $112,000 before taxes for 25 years. In addition to buying his first home, Aubuchon plans to pay off bills and make some investments. Aubuchon purchased his lucky ticket at Coastal Star, 1305 Truman in Crystal City, when he stopped to buy a soda and snacks. He let the computer select the winning numbers. They were: 1, 19, 33, 36, 37 and 39. Coastal Star in Crystal City will receive a check for an amount equal to 1 percent of the jackpot - which is approximately $28,000 - for selling the winning ticket to Aubuchon. Coastal Star in Pevely sold the last winning Lotto ticket for the Nov. 21, 1998, drawing. That ticket was purchased by Lee and Diana Bowers of Pevely. The Pevely location received a check for $31,000 for selling the Bowers’ ticket. Since the Lotto game began in October 1986, 103 winning Lotto jackpot tickets have been sold. The lottery has sold a total of 143 winning jackpot tickets worth $1 million or more in all games since lottery sales began in January 1986. One Missouri Lotto jackpot from Aug. 1, 1998, is still unclaimed. That ticket was purchased at Super Thriftway, 1616 E. 63rd in Kansas City. The winning numbers are: 4, 9, 25, 29, 37 and 44. The winner has until Aug. 1, 1999, to claim the $650,000 cash prize. ***** Note: The lottery will also broadcast B-roll and sound bites from today’s news conference from 6:45 - 6:55 p.m. CT on Galaxy 6, Transponder 11, C-Band, Audio 6.2/6.8 MHz, Downlink frequency 3920 MHz.
