Warsaw Clerk Wins $50,000 Tax-Paid

Story Photo audio icon A Warsaw woman can pay off her bills after she won $50,000 tax paid* in the April 16 midday Missouri Lottery’s SHOW ME 5 Paydown drawing. Jackie Burriss, 52, said she bought her winning ticket at R-Corner, Junction Highways 7 & 65 South in Warsaw, where she has been employed as a clerk for the past nine years. Burriss let the computer select her winning numbers. They were: 9, 11, 14, 32 and 37. Burriss said she was redeeming a $2 prize that she had won earlier, and she wanted to buy another $2 SHOW ME 5 Paydown ticket. However, the store owner accidentally generated a $5 SHOW ME 5 Paydown ticket, and Burriss decided to buy the ticket anyway. The winning play was the fourth one on the ticket. "I said, ’That was the best mistake you ever made,’" Burriss said, recalling her conversation with the store’s owner after finding out about her win. Burriss said she and her husband, Gerald, plan to use the money to pay off their debts. "I’m paying off my Jeep, and I’m paying off my husband’s truck; paying off our house loan, and whatever’s left, we’ll go from there," she said. Burriss said she would also like to use some money to buy some new living room furniture. To date, 104 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since it began Nov. 6, 2000. A total of 814 players won a $25,000 tax-paid prize in the previous SHOW ME 5 game, which ran from Nov. 6, 1994, to Nov. 5, 2000. * The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
