Kirksville Group is Named Lottery Team of the Month

Congratulations to "The Working Joes" of Kirksville! "The Working Joes" were recognized as the Lottery Team of the Month for March as part of the Missouri Lottery’s 2006 Lottery Captain’s promotion. The promotion awards a Lottery players group with prizes and a feature at Molottery.com each month during the calendar year.
"The Working Joes" are a group of 10 co-workers at Ortech, an automotive manufacturing facility. The members are: Kim Barnett (team captain), Judy Branstetter, Angie Buck, Diana Cunningham and Jeannie Elsea, all of Kirksville; Linda Bondy, Unionville; Catherine Dempsey, Atlanta; Brad Ray and Marla Roan, Novinger; and Linda Stukenberg, Novelty.
The original group of "The Working Joes" was formed in 1998. They’ve had members come and go, but they still have three original members in the group. They play Powerball on Wednesdays and Saturdays every week. Each person puts in $1 per drawing. When the jackpot gets large, they contribute $2 each. They use Quick Pick to let the computer choose their numbers.
Barnett usually buys "The Working Joes’" tickets at Ayerco, 2214 N. Baltimore in Kirksville. She keeps the tickets until she checks Molottery.com the next day to find the winning numbers. If they win a small prize on a drawing, they put the winnings toward tickets for the next drawing. If they win anything over $100, they split the prize.
The lucky group won $5,000 playing Powerball in 2001. Each of the nine team members at that time received $555.55. Barnett said she checked the numbers on the Lottery Web site and started screaming. Branstetter said she knew they must have won something, but it must not have been the "big" prize because Barnett hadn’t fainted.
"That was an exciting day!" said Barnett.
Barnett’s advice for other captains is simple. She says to "have fun and dream big because anything can happen."
"We keep playing from week to week in the hopes of winning big and being able to make sure our families are taken care of so they don’t have to struggle like we do," said Barnett. "We also enjoy the thrill, and we try to avoid the defeat."
